VI INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE VISIONES DE LO FANTÁSTICO:
“FANTASTIC AND HUMOR”
University of Minho (Braga, Portugal) June 26, 27 and 28, 2024
Humor and the fantastic do not seem to combine well, judging by the (apparently) opposite effects they produce on the reader: fear and laughter, concern and amusement. However, it is evident that the fantastic and humor share a common goal, manifested in different ways: the questioning of the order of reality and the mechanisms that explain/construct it. As Anna Boccuti warns, “restlessness and laughter represent two mirror effects, the result of the same textual strategy that aims to disorient the reader, to make him doubt his convictions about the known world, now showing its darkest side, now illuminating its most ridiculous facets”.
The hybridization of the fantastic and humor is increasingly present in current narrative, cinema or comics, through the use of irony and parody as resources that enhance the distorting effect of history, without implying -and this is essential- that the narrated/represented phenomena lose their status as impossible. At the same time, this hybridization also allows creators to explore new avenues of expression, new ways of carrying out an (always) necessary update of the motifs and conventions that define the fantastic.
The central objective of this conference is to explore the connections between the fantastic and humor, proposing studies on the various forms and senses in which such connections are manifested in fiction and art.
As guest speakers we will have the presence of three renowned specialists: Carlos Reis (Universidade de Coimbra), Rexina Vega (Universidad de Vigo) and Anna Boccuti (Università degli Studi di Torino). To them we must add several writers, such as Luís Corte Real, Cristina Fernández Cubas, Suso de Toro, Ana Martínez Castillo, the aforementioned Rexina Vega and David Roas.
The GRUPO DE ESTUDIOS SOBRE LO FANTÁSTICO (GEF, Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona) and the GRUPO DE ESTUDOS EM IDENTIDADE(S) (G2I; CENTRO DE ESTUDOS HUMANÍSTICOS DA UNIVERSIDADE DO MINHO) invite all interested parties to participate in this meeting, where we propose to reflect on the relationships between the fantastic and humor in the fiction of the 20th and 21st centuries, both in narrative and in theater, cinema, comics, television, painting or video games, in any language and country.
